EnglishMETAMORPHOSIS
by Julie Meitz (US) & Philippe Pellier (FR) 2012 Interactive digital art An interactive video installation reflecting on identity and altered identity in reference to the iconic character of Joan of Arc. It's a kaleidoscope of anachronism images; subjective, emotional, disturbing, in perpetual metamorphosis, and thus making us question our values, prejudices and general perceptions of the world. We enter facing the screen and our face appears on the screen composed as a series of classic images of Joan. Then the faces of this heroine transform into a portrait gallery of unexpected historical figures of the twentieth century (Martin Luther King, Rimbaud, Josephine Baker...) and fictional characters from contemporary collective imagination (Alice in Wonderland, Rambo, King Kong, ..). By displaying known historical and fictional faces of the twentieth century, we attempt to disrupt our fantasized perception of this French heroine, and propel us into the heart of the 21st century social life, through a process of altered-identities. It's like a personal game that questions our relationship to ourselves and to others; fundamental questions to our differences and tolerances. What characters do you recognize? MUSIDORA - French actress and director who died in 1957, known as “the muse of the Surrealists”, famous for her role as “dangerous beauty” (femme fatale)? KING KONG – fictitious monster from 1933, a cinema icon representing “masculinity and monster"? L'ABBE PIERRE - French Catholic priest who died in 2007, known for his altruism and strong belief, famous for his constant fight for the dignity of the most poor? MISSAK MANOUCHIAN - French poet of Armenian descent shot February 21, 1944 at Mont Valerian, communist militant and resistant who led the famous group, “Affiche Rouge”, symbol of idealism, martyr and the love of France? RAMBO – fictional character of cinema 1972 played by Sylvester Stallone, representing the caricature of a rebellious male warrior? ANNE FRANK - German Jewish teenager who died in 1945 at the age of 16 in the concentration camp at Belgen-Belsen, known worldwide for her intimate journal on daily life during Nazi occupation (childrenhood and sacrifice)? JANIS JOPLIN - American rock singer, rebel, died of heroin overdose, Los Angeles 1970; she symbolized destructive passion, charisma and the "possessed"? And thus the gallery of portraits goes on and on... Be surprised by seeing your favorites, or allured by mysterious faces unknown, and then of course there is YOU among them…a universality that binds all with the immortality of Joan of Arc... This installation is the first collective creation between Julie Meitz and Philippe Pellier. It was made for the 600th birthday of Joan of Arc at Domremy-la-pucelle. A production by the museum Centre Faces of Joan, Mobil’homme, Conseil Général des Vosges, DRAC Lorraine. |
